Women Who Follow A Low-Fat Diet Lower Their Risk of Death From Breast Cancer, Study Finds.

Following a low-fat diet significantly reduces the risk of death from breast cancer, according to a new study.

Nearly 49,000 postmenopausal women… with no history of breast cancer… were randomly assigned to either follow their regular diet or join an intervention group that worked to reduce fat intake to 20 percent of daily calories.

During 8-and-a-half years of intervention there were 8 percent fewer breast cancer cases in the low-fat group.

After nearly 20 years of follow-up, the researchers found that deaths after breast cancer were 21 percent lower in the group that cut fat intake and increased vegetable, fruit and grain consumption.

The president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology calls these findings “striking” and says, “It’s gratifying to see this overall important health recommendation give some concrete findings showing long-term benefit.”
